Victorian Charm & Scenic Islands: Escape Winter In Georgia’s Hidden Gem

Atlanta may be all the rage right now, being named the #1 destination to live in the U.S. as well as the best city to celebrate Christmas, but Georgia offers so much more than bustling, affordable cities.
Second behind Atlanta in terms of popularity has got to be Savannah, a timeless city oozing charm and quintessential “southern hospitality”.
But digging deeper into the “Peach State” lies more hidden gems ranging from lakeside getaways and cozy mountain havens to one small town recently highlighted as one of Georgia’s top warm winter escapes.
Set just an hour north of the Florida-Georgia line lies the historic town of Brunswick, founded in 1771, exuding Victorian charm, numerous scenic islands, and splendid mild winters for a crowd-free escape.
Victorian Charm & Less Crowds
Oftentimes, travelers feel the need to jet across the Atlantic and explore Europe for a sense of timeless charm, but that’s simply not the case.
Many of America’s biggest cities have lost their heritage in the midst of towering skylines – a far cry from places like London, Paris, and Athens.
The good news is you won’t need a passport to visit America’s charismatic small towns, many of which are in the South in delightful states such as Georgia.
Brunswick is one of many, but it makes for an awesome escape, specifically during winter, as you can expect virtually no crowds while you wander Victorian-era streets in breezy 60s weather.
A great starting point is downtown Brunswick, a quaint area lined with Victorian-style buildings, Mom & Pop shops, diners, and cozy cafes for a pick-me-up.
A couple of the most photo-worthy spots are the circa-1900s Historic Ritz Theater and Old Glynn County Courthouse, built in 1906.
For a great bite to eat, there’s no better ambiance than Marshside Grill & Bar overlooking winding canals running off the Turtle and Mackay Rivers.
Of course, being a town that feels like it’s been kept in a time capsule, there are old-fashioned inns and Bed and Breakfasts too, such as Brunswick Manor (a TripAdvisor favorite) and numerous Victorian homes for rent on platforms like Vrbo and Airbnb.
Brunswick’s Cluster Of Scenic Islands
Georgia may not be the first to come to mind when looking for a taste of island life, but Brunswick is full of surprises.
There are 4 barrier islands Brunswick claims as their own, part of what’s known as the “Golden Isles”.
Each of these has its own unique draw and appeal, but arguably the most well-known is Jekyll Island, the perfect Hyde-away.
Seriously, though – Jekyll is home to 10 miles of serene shores, including perhaps the most sought-after beach, Driftwood Beach, plus much more like St. Andrews Beach, perfect for hiking, epic sunsets, and common dolphin sightings.
Arguably just as popular, if not second best, is St. Simon’s Island. Here, you’ll discover the largest barrier island of the ‘Isles’ beholding some of the region’s top-rated restaurants like Echo, waters perfect for kayaking, and phenomenal stays ranging from cozy inns and high-end resorts.
Not to mention the fascinating 18th-century Fort Frederica National Monument (free to enter).
Yes, we’re turning the page to 2025, but keep in mind the Golden Isles were awarded the #1 U.S. island by Travel + Leisure in 2023.
Although not quite as popular, the remaining 2 islands, Sea Island, known for luxury hotels and golf courses, and remote Little St. Simons Island, are no snoozefest.
Just know the ladder is only accessible by boat from Hampton River Marina.
Best Way To Reach Brunswick
You might be surprised to learn Brunswick does indeed have an airport (BQK) but offers limited service from Atlanta via Delta.
Otherwise, your best bets are Jacksonville (JAX) or Savannah (SAV). Atlanta is over 4 and half hours away in case you wondered.
For the more adventurous, Amtrak does offer service to Brunswick, too, or you can opt for a road trip.
Once here, no matter how you arrive, you’re in for a treat with a variety of great places to unwind, whether downtown or on one of the islands.
